success for my buddies

One last gig before In It Together Fest, this one was the kick-off show to the Alex G / Elvis Depressedly tour, featuring local favorites Teen Suicide, Wish List, and Ella from Makeshift Shelters, who sadly were unable play as a full band. Below is the scrumptious poster design drawn up by LA Johnson, as well as some awesome videos and photos taken throughout the night.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the last DZ show featuring superb sets in the sweltering heat by Big Ups, Two Inch Astronaut and Atlas At Last. Sadly, Teen Suicide had to drop off the bill last minute due to a family emergency, so those of you who were bummed to miss them that night should definitely make sure to check out the show above. The wonderful Mr. Sean Berg blessed the occasion with the exquisite screenprint below and a few folks snapped some photos and captured video as well. Check out the goods below and stay tuned for more footage in the near future.

Lastly, The Sweets' Greatest Hits received some praise from Myspace, who put the compilation on their list of "25 Best Cassettes of 2014 (so far)" alongside some other stellar work from various label friends. Thanks for the shoutout and look out for a few more tapes coming later this year.

waiting for nothing

I promise you, more info on DZ13 will be released shortly. Production is well under way and the tapes look beautiful. This one's definitely to help you keep calm, cool and collected this summer, and I'm very excited to share these serene sensations with you all in the near future.

For now, it's that time again to invite everybody in the Washington DC area out to the Dougout for a night of visceral post-punk, gloomy puke pop, and emocore at the next DZ live event. Click the flyer below for more details.

Vancouver's Terror Bird has announced her next release. On June 7, 'Clubs' will be available on cassette from SVN SNS RECORDS. Get back on the darkwave groove by peeking Nikki's new video "Waiting For Nothing":

Lastly, for those of you lucky enough to be in the Austin area this weekend, Adam Torres and Caitlin Krauss-Torres will be teaming up to give you a free live show this Saturday at Cenote, and remember to check back on Adam's bandcamp each week for more gentle serenades on his Golden Children demo compilation.

Cassette Store Day

Today is the first ever Cassette Store Day, and while the debate remains open as to whether this will be good or bad for the format and the industry, I'm finding it hard to contain my excitement. Stores from around the world will be releasing exclusive tapes from favorites like Deerhunter, Spectrals, Animal Collective, Teen Suicide, Gold Panda, and many others.

To celebrate, all downloads and merch in the DZ store will be marked off 20% this weekend by using the code "CSD" at checkout. And when your eyeballs have a free moment, take a look at these quick reads discussing some of the pros and cons of this new musical holiday.

I also want to thank the dudes at Tabs Out and Ad Hoc for the kind words on DYVNZMBR2, saying it "runs the gamut of electronic music, from glitched-out beats to feedback-laden buzzsaw drones and lo-fi downtempo hazers. It’s like a huge sandwich that’s too big to get your mouth around so you gotta take it home and cut it up cause you and I both know if you even try it, that shit's falling out of the bread and landing in your lap."

sonic soothsayers

Last month's show with Blithe Field, Teen Suicide and Mono Lisa was a fantastic success! We powered through the remnants of Hurricane Sandy and were able to put on a great night of live music. It's been a few weeks since then, but I'd like to thank everyone who came out and showed their support through donations and snagging up merch. I'm hoping to put on the next event within the next month or two, so stay tuned for details. Another special shoutout to the University of Maryland's independent newspaper, the Diamondback, for posting this lovely article about the event and my showspace affectionately known as the Dougout.

R.I.P. M.B.P.

I've got some sad news to report from DZ HQ today. My laptop has gone kaput just shy of its sixth anniversary. Thankfully I have not lost any pertinent data in the process outside of what was supposed to be the 47th episode of my podcast, ZOMBEARadio. The tracks that I had lined up have all vanished into the ether, but you can look forward to future episodes as soon as my next rig is up and running.

In events news, those of you celebrating dia de los muertos in Washington, DC should stop by the Dougout for a free show presented by DZ TAPES featuring some great acts:
BLITHE FIELD (OH) [eerie sentimental folktronica]
TEEN SUICIDE (MD) [gloomy acoustic ghost punk]
MARBLE LION (QC) [haunting witch pop noise]
MONO LISA (TN) [atmospheric aura-scaping]
CETWING (MD) [glitchy cryogenic chillwave]
A limited supply of screen printed posters will be available for a few bones courtesy of Sean Berg, or get one for free with any purchase of band merch while supplies last. Check out the event info and RSVP by clicking the poster below:
